Lockout Tagout (LOTO) Policies and Procedures Training

Lockout Tagout Training OSHA 1910.147 covers the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected startup of the machines or equipment, or the release of stored energy, could harm the employee. This standard established the minimum performance requirements for the control of such hazardous energy.

Companies may be required to establish an energy control program that requires written procedures for the control of potentially hazardous energy when employees are engaged in maintenance/installation/removal and/or servicing activities.

Employees must be trained to understand the energy control program and have the knowledge and skills needed for safe application, usage, and removal of energy controls and must have written certification that each employee has received training.

When tag out systems are used, employees must be trained to know that tags:
  • Do not provide physical restraint and are essentially warning devices
  • May provide a false sense of security
  • Must not be removed without authorization, and must never by bypassed, ignored, or otherwise defeated
  • Must be legible and understandable by all employees in the area
  • Must be made of materials that will withstand the environmental conditions around it
  • Must be securely attached to energy isolating devices so that they cannot be inadvertently or accidentally removed.
Employers are required to provide retraining to maintain employee proficiency and when introducing any new or revised control methods and procedures. Retraining of authorized and affected employees also must be provided when:
  • There is a change in job assignments
  • A new hazard is introduced due to a change in machines, equipment, or process
  • There is a change in the energy control procedures; or
  • A periodic inspection reveals inadequacies in the company procedures or in the knowledge of the employees.
Our customized training program includes:
  • Job site hazard analysis
  • Scope, Application, and Purpose
  • System Grounding
